He thinks he will be selling more tile pools soon. He has built one tile pool, is completing a second and plans to have his own pool tiled.Įrickson won’t reveal where he gets his tile installers, for fear others will catch on. Nils Erickson of Erickson Custom Pools & Spas in Orlando, Clermont and South Daytona Beach, agrees: “The work has to be perfect.”Įrickson is a rare Central Florida pool builder who has experience building tile pools. “You don’t have details like that with plaster or exposed aggregate, but you don’t have uneven pieces of tile.” “The installation can vary tremendously, depending on the pool’s initial surface,” says Bower, who adds that the surface may have to be finessed to make installation easier. In fact, sometimes Bower requires the pool’s sides and floor to meet at a 90-degree angle rather than on a curve to lessen the number of cuts that must be made to ensure that the tiles fit.

There is much less room for error in a pool’s interior when tiles are used, because the tiles are flat and are difficult to install on uneven surfaces, Bower says. In the latter case, the tiles are pushed into the plaster the paper is wet and pulled from the tile fronts, and then the tile is grouted. The tiny tiles come attached to a 12-by-12 inch mesh, which is pressed into soft pool plaster and then grouted, or they may be glued front-side-down on a paper backing. Tile installers for The New American Home pool were flown in from Mexico. Local pool finishers have plastering skills and can put a straight line of tiles above a pool’s waterline, but none have been trained in the intricacies of installing 1-by-1-inch ceramic tiles on a pool’s entire interior. “We don’t have any orders yet, but people around the country are calling me about it.”Ī limitation on building tile pools will be finding the labor to install them. “I know it’s going to catch on,” says Manley. The huge amount of exposure The New American Home pool received from the International Builders’ Show has sparked a lot of interest. Manley also thinks more high-end buyers will be interested in installing tile interiors.

“They are looking at the long-range value of tile and the aesthetics that it provides,” he says. “You can spend upwards of $100,000 on tiles inside pools,” Manley says.ĭespite the cost, designer Bower says he thinks more people are considering tile pool interiors.

The cost of tiles can vary from $4 to $30 a square foot, he says. That compares with about $5,000 to $6,000 for an exposed pebble finish and $3,000 to $4,000 for an exposed aggregate finish.Īnd that $25,000 is just a starting point. The least expensive tile pool interior costs about $25,000 for an average pool, says Michael Manley of Champagne Pools in Sanford. The tiles and the labor to install them are what make tile pools much more expensive than any other interior finish. So why isn’t every Central Florida backyard pool covered in these beautiful, practical, nearly indestructible 1-inch squares?
